When tar spot is detected mid-season, immediate action is essential to prevent severe yield losses.

PROBLEM

  • Tar spot pressure was identified in 41% of the field in mid-July following Mission 5.
  • Yield loss from tar spot can be severe, with up to 50 bushels per acre observed in some cases.
  • The disease is difficult to spot, requiring detailed scouting, which was successfully aided by the georeferencing feature in the Taranis mobile app.

RECOMMENDATION

  • Crop advisor was able to confirm what appeared in the insight
  •  Apply Veltyma or Trivapro (upsell from the retailer) at $26/ac + $14 for application +adding some adjuvants & insecticides ~$5 = $45/acre:
  •  Retailer 30% margin is equal to $13.5 additional sales per acre
  •  There were 7,190 affected acres X $13.5 = $86,280
  •  Monitor disease spread and consider third fungicide application
  • Tagged leaf-level tar spot insight in Taranis web app (manually circled black spots)

OPPORTUNITY

  •  Timely application (VT/R1-R3) of top end foliar fungicide can protect up to 24 bu/acre at harvest, $96 per acre yield increase
  •  Closer relationship between grower and advisor
  •  Peace of mind knowing Taranis will catch this disease that can be a huge hit to yields and we can monitor effectiveness in next mission
  •  Evaluate hybrid that may be less susceptible and look at management practices for next season to save money
  •  Use this story to increase fungicide sales with 60% growers who don’t apply today
