In case you missed the 2024 Farm Progress Show Preview on RFD TV, Jason Minton, Taranis’ Chief Commercial Officer, shelled down just how important artificial intelligence (AI) for agriculture and what Taranis’ new generative AI tool, Ag Assistant, will mean for ag retailers.
“Taranis is a technology company that’s bringing leaf-level images through the use of advanced technologies like drone,” Minton said. “We’re partnering with ag retailers to take images of their Taranis enrolled field and providing almost real-time insights based on those images.”
Whether it’s using a large language model like Chat GPT or leveraging Taranis insights to save inputs and yield for a farmer – AI can seem too good to be true. Minton, however, tells Pearson and RFD TV viewers that AI isn’t something to be afraid of.
“AI needs to be demystified; it’s a little bit scary to some people, maybe a little intimidating to others,” he shared. “The great thing for agriculture is that Taranis is at the forefront of AI. We’re using AI as a solution for agriculture and providing the information retailers and farmers need to make decisions.”
Minton says that Taranis is using a two-pronged approach to capture and deliver insights the industry has never before had access to.
“Taranis is looking for any sort of pest insect damage to the plant, fungal diseases – crop nutrient deficiencies can even be spotted. And it’s looking at every single acre of every single field,” he said.
Farmers don’t have to wait for development or new iterations of AI – Taranis has been delivering AI-powered insights since 2017.
And one of the most impressive aspects of Taranis’ technology is the speed at which it delivers those AI-powered insights.
“If you are a retailer and you’re using the Taranis tool right now, the flight that’s being flown right now would be available to you on your desktop tomorrow morning. Those insights would be ready for your review from the flight that was just flown the day before,” Minton told Pearson, adding that the team is working to deliver those insights even faster.
“In the future we’re looking at a technology that would allow the retailer (via Taranis) to be able to upload imagery and receive insights right there in the field. The delivery will be almost instantaneous. And the insights will be even more impactful for input and management decisions for a retailer and farmer.”
Recently launched, Pearson asked about Ag Assistant, a tool Minton alludes to early in the conversation and is excited to share more about:
“Ag Assistant takes insights to another level by looking at the insights and merging that information with other sources of data. For example, it would look at weather data, precipitation, temperature – even extension and academic research for identified pressures,” he said. “What you get is a not only the delivered insight saying ‘here is the problem’ but now you’ll get the insights on what caused the problem.”
Minton invited viewers to see Taranis in action for themselves at the 2024 Farm Progress Show, and promised a hands-on experience.
“We will have an engagement tool in the booth to provide live demonstrations. We’re not afraid to put a live tool on demo in front of retailers and growers to show them the real value it will add to their farm or retail business,” Minton said. “Seeing is believing!”
The 2024 Farm Progress Show promises to be an exciting showcase of Taranis’ cutting-edge AI technologies, offering farmers and retailers alike a glimpse into the future of precision agriculture: Taranis!
